gesamte Flusseinzugsgebiet
beträgt 5749 km².
Davon liegen 3437 km² (60 %) in Bulgarien, die restlichen 2312 km² (40 %) in Griechenland.
Der Fluss, der in Bulgarien Mesta genannt wird, fließt vom Berg Rila durch Südbulgarien und mündet schließlich
nach einer Gesamtfließstrecke von etwa 235 km durch Bulgarien und Griechenland bei Keramoti ins Meer.
Auf griechischer Seite erfährt der Nestos bei seiner Länge von 130 km an den Dämmen
Thissavros, Platanovrissi, Temenos und Toxotes einen Anstau mit Dammhöhen von 175 m, 95 m, 45 m und 4 m.
(Zum Vergleich: Eder-Talsperre 42 m, Möhne-Talsperre 35 m, Wupper-Talsperre 32 m)
Ab der letzten Sperrstufe (Wehr an der Nationalstraße/Toxotes) wird der Nestos auf 30 km eingedeicht zum Meer geführt.
